Exploring Colours
This blog is inspired by Mrs. Myers' Kindergarten blog, she let the students in her classroom explore and be imaginative while still remaining within the guidelines of the The Full-Day Early-Learning Kindergarten program. In her blog the children explored colours in different variations, problem solving, experimentation, and hands-on learning. This idea of experimenting and exploring with colours lead to many other main ideas that can go off of this activity to many more. Taking what the children are already interested in and expanding off of this can be beneficial to the teacher and student. This is just one example of how one can get inspired of of a simple idea and make it into something amazing.
The Big Idea in Science:
"Children are curious and connect prior knowledge to new contexts in order to understand the world around them" (Ministry of Education, 2010. p. 114)
Overall Expectation:
1. demonstrate an awareness of the natural and built environment through hands-on investigations, observations, questions, and representations of their findings (Ministry of Education, 2010. p. 114)
Specific Expectations:
1.2 sort and classify groups of living and non-living things in their own way (e.g., using sorting tools such as hula hoops, sorting circles, paper plates, T-charts, Venn diagrams) (Ministry of Education, 2010. p. 116)
The Bid Idea in Mathematics:
"Young children have a conceptual understanding of mathematics and of mathematical thinking and reasoning" (Ministry of Education, 2010. p. 97)
Overall Expectation:
DM5: sort, classify, and display a variety of concrete objects, collect data, begin to read and describe displays of data, and begin to explore the concept of probability in everyday contexts (Ministry of education, 2010. p. 97)
Specific Expectations:
DM5.1 sort, classify, and compare objects and describe attributes used (Ministry of Education, 2010. p. 110)
DM5.2 collect objects and data and make representations of their observations, using concrete graphs (Ministry of Education, 2010. p. 111)
The Big Idea in Language:
"Children are effective communicators" (Ministry of Education, 2010. p. 72)
Overall Expectations:
1. Communicate by talking and by listening and speaking to others for a variety of purposes and in a variety of contexts. (Ministry of Education, 2010. p. 72)
Specific Expectations:
1.6 use language to talk about their thinking, to reflect, and to solve problems (Ministry of Education, 2010. p. 76)
1.9 describe personal experiences, using vocabulary and details appropriate to the situation (Ministry of Education, 2010. p. 78)
This Youtube video below if of children discussing changing colours in a classroom setting with their hands; this is an example of how children had use their vocabulary to describe their personal experience with the changing colours when they mis their hands together.
